Would you like a little free with that music?

If you stopped by our website today, you may have noticed a wee change to our homepage. In case you missed it, we made some of our most compelling offers more…explicit.

Now, although there’s three big “Free’s”, I’m here to talk about the first one - Free Music.

You’re probably tempted to just hit that link, huh? No worries - go check it out and I’ll wait right here. [pause] Ready? Okay then.

The music on the page above comes from the artists who have registered with MusicIP. By setting up an account and letting us know that your music exists online, we will:

Grab it.
Identify it.
Promote it.

The grab part means we’ll crawl the URL you tell us about for your music. When we identify your music we’re checking to see if we already have information on it stored in our database (which grows each and every day). If we don’t know about it, this is where a sub-step comes in - we analyze it. Hundreds of attributes (but just minutes) later, your song(s) are fingerprinted and assigned a portable unique ID (you can read more about PUIDs here).

Finally, we’re ready to promote your music.

The Free music page is the first stop. There’s an RSS feed available at the bottom of the page so you can be the first to know when new music has been added. [Note: I almost forgot…this part gets even better. In iTunes, you can use the RSS Feed to automatically download new tracks to your computer as they come in.]

It also shows up in the Discovery Window of the MusicIP Mixer, looking something like this:

Recommended right where the music lovers are listening. Not a bad place to be, is it?

And that’s just the beginning. In the next few months we’ll have lots to tell you about, but for now…it’s time to check out some new music.

[…] Take this example. So, I do some notes about the free music happening on our website. I write up a little blog post about it, and press the “Publish” button. […]

[…] A few weeks ago, we launched our free music feed, which contains music posted by artists which they want to share with fans. In case you’re a little intimidated by RSS feeds, you can also access these tracks inside iTunes as a podcast - it looks like this: […]

Is there a way that I can put an image on the song download page and have it automatically added as the album or song artwork?

If not, perhaps it could be done via standard filenames, like .jpg or .jpg

  4. Martin Cosgrave Says:

Umm… in my post above which says “like .jpg or .jpg” I actually meant to post <song name>.jpg, or <album name>.jpg but the stuff inside the angle brackets got mangled :)

    Cheers, Martin

    Hey Martin!

Adding album art to the rss feed is something that we’ve looked into, but it’s not something we’re going to be adding in the short term. Down the line though, we’d definitely like to have support for album artwork and possibly artist images. Thanks for letting us know that’s something you’d like to see - helps us check to make sure we’re on the right path!
